Have you seen the pictures of the oceans filled with trash? Did you know that if we don’t do something about it soon there will be more plastic than fish in the sea?

Producing less waste in your workplace is not only eco-friendly but also cost effective.

The following are simple tips to help you reduce the amount of garbage you generate at the office:

Take notes on your computer or mobile device: There are a lot of programs or apps for your computer, tablet or cellphone for note-taking instead of using paper. You can also rely on your device’s smart personal assistant (Siri, Google, Cortana, Alexa, etc.).

Use a digital calendar: They are very practical because you can easily share them with others, access them from anywhere and update information at any time.

Buy ebooks: They are cheaper and take up less space than regular books.

Share or exchange books: Reduce costs by sharing your books with coworkers or you can set up an exchange system.

Think twice before printing documents and if it’s absolutely necessary, print on both sides of the page.

If you have pieces of paper that have been printed only on one side, cut them in small squares and use the blank side to write quick notes and reminders.

Maximize the use of sticky notes: These little pieces of paper are very practical at the office but at the end of the day they end up piling up in the trash. Whenever possible try to use them on both sides, you’ll use less paper and save a bit of money.

Forget disposable plastics: When ordering takeout ask your provider to skip the disposable cutlery; better bring some from home so you can reuse them. Also, if it’s not necessary, ask them not to bag your food.

And, what about straws? They’re really dispensable but if you do prefer to sip your drink, you can buy a stainless steel straw; they sell them in most major retail stores or you can get them online; some packages include a small brush to wash them.

Whenever possible try to bring a home-cooked meal to work, this way you can avoid 100% of the waste generated when ordering takeout.

Say NO to plastic water bottles: Plastic bottles take hundreds of years to decompose and end up taking up a lot of space in the landfills. A better option is to buy a refillable bottle that, besides being practical and eco-friendly, will help you save some money.

Even if you apply only one or two of these small actions, you will contribute to taking care of the planet. Start today!
