“Our plan is to return to an office-centric culture as our baseline. We believe it enables us to invent, collaborate, and learn together most effectively”.
The previous quote was taken from a memo sent to Amazon collaborators, who are expected to return to the office space by fall of this year. But why?
Despite taking all the security measures required by health institutions, such as checking the temperature before entering, wearing a face mask, providing sanitizing gel, among others; only 10% of Amazon employees currently work in a physical office.
Unlike other companies, Amazon is committed to a work culture where everyone is in office spaces. Clearly this won't happen overnight. This company is planning a staggered return and according to the information obtained each day about vaccines, at least in the United States. That's why they estimate that all collaborators will be in an Amazon workspace by fall.

As the memo mentions, the main reasons are the ease of collaborating and learning as a team while being in person in a workspace and meeting rooms, without the difficulties that still arise in online modalities, such as technical and electrical problems. Not long ago, in February, Ciudad Juárez went through difficulties of this kind.
Some would think that Amazon's decision is somewhat sudden, however, during the contingency, Amazon was constantly listing and buying offices. For example, with 1.3 million collaborators globally, Amazon expects to employ another 25,000 people in Bellevue, thus finding workspaces in that city.
The office-centric culture in Mexico

On the other hand, Jon Scholes, president and CEO of the Downtown Seattle Association, mentions that this decision “It’s a big positive impact for downtown and speaks to what we see as the continued strong relevance of the office and the desire of workers to have access to great arts, culture, sports, walkability, public events and nightlife before, during and after their workday”.
As you may have heard, Amazon recently revealed its plans to open a work area in Hermosillo, Sonora. This is not the only one in the country, since it joins those already established in Nuevo León, Jalisco and the State of Mexico. This undoubtedly represents important benefits for the entity and the entire country.
The more companies with this mindset grow in Mexico, the more the office-centric culture will spread. As Scholes mentioned, it is not only about renting work spaces, but it is about a whole lifestyle that affects local businesses, art and cultural events, as well as sports and citizen coexistence around these business centers and offices.
While it might be comfortable to work from home all the time, it can become selfish, as other businesses we frequented suffer from declines in sales and activity. Likewise, artistic and sporting events cease to take place, affecting artists and athletes in a significant way.
If you also bet on an office-centered work culture, we have the ideal space for you!
