In the ever-evolving landscape of innovation and entrepreneurship, the establishment of innovation hubs has proven to be pivotal in promoting economic growth and technological advancement.

Within the ecosystem of TechHUB and The Bridge Accelerator, Funax emerges as a crucial partner. The significance of Funax within this ecosystem cannot be overstated, nor its functions, and the broader implications of such a system that fosters innovation. Furthermore, Funax supports STEM initiatives and the innovative Fab Lab - Digital Fabrication Laboratory concept, established at the Bits and Atoms center at MIT.

Funax: A Cornerstone of the Innovation Ecosystem

Funax, a partnering non-governmental organization, plays a pivotal role within the TechHUB and The Bridge Accelerator ecosystem by serving as the operating and fundraising arm for multiple programs. This strategic partnership provides much-needed operations, back office support, and fundraising support for early-stage startups and SME’s.. Funax's focus on facilitating the transformation of creative ideas into sustainable ventures aligns perfectly with the overarching goals of TechHUB.

One of the key functions of Funax is to identify promising startups within the TechHUB community and channel resources, mentorship, and financial support to help them thrive. This role is essential in nurturing entrepreneurial talent and fostering innovation within the region.

The Broad Implications of the Funax System

The presence of an organization like Funax within the Techhub ecosystem has several broad implications:

  • Stimulating Innovation: By addressing the critical issue of fundraising for programs, Funax stimulates innovation within the region. It provides startups with the financial resources required to develop their products and services and bring them to the market.
  • Job Creation: Funax's support for startups ultimately leads to job creation because these companies expand and require a skilled workforce to meet their growing demands. This contributes to the economic development of the region.
  • Economic Growth: The success of startups supported by Funax can significantly impact the economic growth of the region, fostering a culture of entrepreneurship and innovation that attracts further investment and talent.
  • Global Connectivity: By partnering with TechHUB and The Bridge Accelerator, Funax provides startups with access to a global network of experts and resources, allowing them to tap into international markets and expertise.
  • Investing in Youth Education: By partnering with Microsoft, Funax builds teacher capacity and student interest in computer sciences through its TEALS program (as well as the Fab Lab Mobile described below). The TEALS (Technology Education and Learning Support) program has been operating for over ten years, in 8 countries. In 2020, its first expansion outside the US was launched at TechHUB, TEALS Juarez program is currently serving over 40 schools and has reached over 2000 students in 2023. In Ciudad Juarez, TEALS provides students bound for manufacturing with more career options than were ever available before.

STEM Initiatives and Fab Lab Mobile

In addition to its program operations and fundraising role, Funax extends its support to STEMs (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) initiatives, recognizing the importance of these fields in driving innovation and economic growth. One of the notable programs supported by Funax is the Fab Lab Mobile, a project that brings STEMs learning to local underserved schools.

The Fab Lab Mobile, inspired by the Fab Lab concept originating from MIT, is essentially a mobile laboratory on wheels that is housed in a large vehicle (Van). It rotates on a weekly basis to underserved schools. The vehicle is equipped with advanced tools and technologies that enable students to engage in hands-on STEMs learning and activities. This mobile program not only enriches the education of local students but also serves as a powerful catalyst for future innovation.

Funax's support for the Fab Lab Mobile program reflects a forward-thinking approach to community development. By fostering STEM education at the grassroots level, this initiative prepares the next generation with the skills and knowledge required to participate in the innovation ecosystem effectively.

Broader Implications of Funax's STEM Initiatives

STEMs jobs have increased by 79% since 1990, and a computer science major can expect to earn 40% more than the rest of their college cohort. But stats from 2019 show that only 20% of American high school students are ready for college-level STEMs.

In Mexico, broader access to STEMs education has been shown to narrow the gender gap in the workforce, even though women, minorities, and those from rural areas are still less likely to pursue STEMs education. This is why it is so important to foster early exposure to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics learning. The benefits of STEM initiatives like those provided by Funax cannot be understated, as they provide the following:

  • Skill Development: The Fab Lab Mobile program equips students with practical skills in STEM fields, enhancing their employability and contribution to the innovation hub.
  • Increased Local Talent Pool: By nurturing local talent, Funax, and its STEM initiatives help create a pool of skilled individuals who can contribute to the growth and success of regional startups.
  • Global Competitiveness: A strong focus on STEM education ensures that the region remains globally competitive in technology and innovation, attracting investment and talent.

Funax's role within the innovation ecosystem of TechHUB and The Bridge Accelerator is indispensable. It not only addresses the crucial issue of funding for startups but also extends its support to STEM initiatives like TEALS and the Fab Lab Mobile program, sowing the seeds for a new generation of tech leaders. By fostering the next generation of innovators and entrepreneurs, Funax plays a vital part in shaping a bright and technologically advanced future for the Borderplex region and globally.
